“The Raja Uda area is now filling up with hipster cafes, and we want to go with the flow,” adds Penangite Eeyan Chuah, Urban Xchange’s main curator. Raja Uda’s shining star inaugurates a new community arts space. This is just the tip of an iceberg of events and projects that the two young curators organised with their team of collaborators and international artists. This year, in fact, Urban Xchange’s plan was grand: preparations started early with the Artisans Project, a two-month-long collaboration that paired six contemporary artists and designers with six traditional Penang craftsmen, including a rattan weaver, a signboard carver and a paper effigy maker. The goal was to mix the old with the new, the traditional with the experimental, to create artworks that reflect Penang’s century-old trades using contemporary produce.

The highlights of the festival, which runs until November 15, include the
launch of the Artisan Project at the Hin Bus Depot on Jalan Gurdwara at 8pm tomorrow.

The project sees six contemporary artists learning from Penang artisans skilled
in kolam-drawing, rattan-weaving, anchor-making, paper effigy-making and
Chinese calligraphy, and then incorporating what they have learnt in new art projects for the festival.
